Harrier Monument
U.S. Hwy. 70 and Cunningham Blvd.
Havelock, NC

Vehicles passing the intersection of U.S. 70 and Cunningham Boulevard in Havelock, North Carolina often slow for a good look at the AV-8A Harrier jump jet decorating the corner. Mounted on a pedestal in a circle of flags, the AV-8A celebrates aircraft design history. Although Cherry Point is home to the largest number of Harriers in the world, the AV-8A jet was taken out of service, replaced by the new AV-8B twenty five years ago. The most noticeable difference between the two jets is the landing gear on the wing tips of the 8A, while the 8B landing gear is closer to the center of the wings. The jet on display was the second AV-8A given by military officials to civilians for display purposes (the first is on display at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.).
